Ages 11 to 14
Home education for 11 to 14 year olds
Planning breadth, progression and growing independence during the early secondary years.
Build breadth without recreating a school timetable
The early secondary years are a useful time to maintain strong English, Maths and Science while widening History, Geography, Art, Life Skills and Religious Education. Subjects can be organised across a week rather than all appearing every day.
Independence should grow gradually
Independent learning requires clear materials, manageable planning and a way to ask for help. Begin with one part of the routine the learner can own, such as checking the plan or choosing the order of two lessons.
Keep a record of sequence and work
Record lesson titles, examples of work, practical activity, reading and parent observations. A useful record shows what was taught, what the learner produced and what support may be needed next.
