How parents can facilitate home education without pretending to be classroom teachers or knowing every answer in advance.
Do I need to be a teacher to home educate?
You do not need to copy a classroom teacher’s role. A parent can organise suitable resources, protect time for learning, ask questions, notice difficulties, find specialist help where needed and keep a record of progress.
Use materials that carry the instructional load
A strong resource explains the idea to the learner, gives examples, breaks practice into steps and provides useful guidance for the supporting adult. If every lesson requires you to research the topic and design activities from scratch, the resource is transferring its planning burden to you.
It is safe to say ‘let’s find out’
Not knowing an answer can model honest learning. The important distinction is between exploring together and leaving a learner without direction. Keep a reliable place to check factual questions and return to unanswered points.
When to bring in outside support
Families may choose tutors, groups, therapists or subject specialists where appropriate. Outside help should solve a real need, not prove that the parent has failed. Safeguarding and suitability still need careful checking.
